In the local language isi-Zulu, the Drakensberg Mountains are called uKhahlamba which means the barrier of spears.

The Drakensberg Mountains running for more than 1000 km in the eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal and forming the northeastern border of Lesotho with South Africa

The closest major city is Pietermaritzburg which is also the capital of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Hiking in the Drakensberg

The Drakensberg Mountains are a popular hiking destination with lovely day walks, challenging trips that can lasts for days or even weeks.

On of the most challenging hiking tours is the Drakensberg Traverse with more than 300 km. Only experienced hikers who are energetic and trust in their hiking skills should face this challenge.

While most of the Drakensberg peaks have been conquered, a few minor pinnacles haven’t, which opens up opportunities.

Other activities

Besides hiking, a lot of other activities can be persuit in the area, such as paragliding, horse riding, bungee-jumping, zip-lining, paint-ball shooting, quad biking, mountain biking etc.
